Online dating, it is an increasingly popular topic today. You may remember that in the past it was obvious when two people met at a party, at school, or at work, and it was obvious when sparks flew between them. Today it is a little different. Maybe it\’s because modern technology has made it possible to meet anyone. Cool, right? Online dating has many advantages that we have to admit. I can meet someone who lives on the other side of town, and it\’s perfectly fine. Before, I would never have met someone like that, perhaps thanks to apps like Tinder, but there are plenty of opportunities to find someone who is on the same wavelength.
And yet, it can all start with just one swipe or message. Speed is great for the other party, because you can immediately see if you have anything in common with them. But there are pros and cons to everything. While convenient and wonderful, online dating can also feel a bit superficial. A few pictures and a few words can make an instant decision. First impressions matter, but they are often deceptive. One wonders if they have actually met the other person, or if they have exchanged pretty pictures and a few messages that say nothing about what they have in common.
But maybe that\’s just me thinking that dating should be more about personal contact and spending time together. Online communication may be great, but nothing can replace that moment of actually meeting someone and knowing how they make you feel, smell, laugh, and treat you. But even this can develop from one message into a great relationship or just a super friendly one. Who knows. On the other hand, compared to what we were left with before, when dating had to wait for fate or chance, online dating is a chance to broaden our horizons and meet people we wouldn\’t normally have the chance to meet. And now, it is not just about good looks, but also about how well you get along with the person you are dating.
