Grapes are grown in our region especially for its delicious grapes and subsequent wine production. We all know the vineyards of South Moravia well and immediately have some good varieties of glass that fascinate us.
But wine and vines can be grown in our own garden not only for taste and further processing of grapes, but also as a practical and comfortable haven for our seats.
The vine belongs to the oldest tree in the world – fruit trees. This is a climbing plant that lives at a great age, like some trees. But for it to thrive, it needs a good place and proper care.
Where and how to plant vines
Vines are planted in spring or autumn in pre-prepared holes of compost-filled clay. When the vine grows, it is necessary to tie it to the support. It does not require particularly sunny and warm habitats, that is, windy hills and the north side. It grows well along the southern slopes and houses, which are protected from frost. It does not require watering and copes well with dry soil. But it also needs enough nutrients that can be provided by regular fertilization.
When the vine ripens, it needs warm and dry weather, but we can not fully provide it. Therefore, wine can also be grown in greenhouses. When the grapes are ripe, they can be turned over and eaten or processed further to make wine, juice, mast or marmalade in most cases. You can also make raisins by drying them.
Vine as a screen against the Sun
Thanks to this tree\’s excellent climbing ability, longevity and rapid growth, it is also well suited as a stand for our pergola and garden seating. Therefore, the vine gives us a natural shade in the hot summer. In autumn, its leaves turn into a beautiful color, which again makes our garden special with something new. Some varieties grow up to 7 meters in height and can be used as screens and hedges, while others allow vines to climb the walls of the house, creating a natural and changing façade
